Starting from some theoretical aspects regarding hypothetical meaning, the present paper focuses on a series of relevant hypothetical constructions used in English and their corresponding structures in Italian with the aim of identifying formal and semantic similarities between these structures in the two languages envisaged. Moreover, reference is made to a series of structures in which the English Subjunctive and the Italian ‘congiuntivo’ express theoretical meaning with the aim of proving that the formal and semantic aspects shared by these two languages may facilitate the better understanding and correct use of both hypothetical and theoretical constructions by English learners who study Italian and vice versa.
